GADA Evacuates Residents as Cracks Threaten Four-Storey Building in Aba
The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has evacuated residents from a four-storey building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after a preliminary structural assessment revealed extensive cracks around its foundation, raising fears of a possible collapse.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Authority said its Building Control Unit, Engineering Department, and Town Planning Department responded immediately after receiving reports of visible cracks in the building.
According to GADA, an initial inspection showed that the building’s foundation had been seriously compromised, making the structure unsafe for human habitation.
The Authority explained that the extent of the damage poses a significant structural risk and warned that the building could collapse if urgent action is not taken. Consequently, the building has been officially declared unsafe, and all occupants have been safely evacuated to prevent any loss of life.
To further protect residents and nearby property owners, GADA disclosed that arrangements are already underway for the controlled demolition of the building. The exercise, it said, will be carried out with strict safety measures to ensure there are no casualties or damage to surrounding structures.
The Authority, however, urged members of the public to remain calm, assuring residents that the situation is fully under control.
It also advised people to cooperate with officials and stay away from the affected area while demolition and other safety operations are being carried out.
Meanwhile, GADA said a comprehensive investigation has commenced to determine the cause of the structural failure.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across Aba, the Authority called on residents to promptly report any signs of structural defects or distress in buildings to the appropriate authorities, stressing that early intervention remains critical in preventing avoidable disasters.
