US Embassy Clarifies Non-Refundable Policy On Visa Application Fees
US Embassy Clarifies Non-Refundable Policy On Visa Application Fees
The US Mission in Nigeria confirmed that visa application fees are completely non-refundable regardless of the decision.
Officials emphasised that the fee pays for processing the application rather than purchasing an issued visa.
Refused applicants must pay a new fee if they choose to reapply in the future.
The announcement addresses widespread public misconceptions regarding visa payment terms.

October 14, () – The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a public clarification regarding its visa fee policies, addressing a persistent misconception among prospective travellers about application refunds.
In a statement published on Wednesday, the US Mission countered claims that applicants whose visa requests are turned down qualify for a monetary refund.
Embassy officials emphasised that the payment made during the submission process covers administrative review costs rather than the visa itself.
Every second brings Nigerians closer to exercising their democratic right and shaping the future of our nation.

Processing Costs Explain Fee Structure

“The fee paid is an application processing fee, not a payment for a visa to be issued”, the US Mission stated. “It covers the cost of processing the application through a final decision, so the fee is non-refundable, regardless of whether the visa is issued or refused.”

The non-refundable policy applies across all non-immigrant and immigrant visa categories. Because the fee funds background checks, consular interviews, document verification, and administrative handling, consular services consume the funds during processing regardless of the final decision.
Applicants who receive a refusal letter do not get their money back, nor can they transfer a previous payment to a future application. Individuals who wish to reapply after a refusal must submit a fresh application and pay the standard processing fee again.
Official Channels Provide Accurate Guidance
The Embassy urged prospective travellers to disregard third-party claims or informal advisors promising guaranteed visa approvals or fee returns.
Consular authorities advised Nigerians seeking travel authorisation to rely exclusively on official government platforms, pointing applicants to the official US Department of State travel website for verified requirements, fee schedules, and application procedures.
