Why Loan Apps Reject Applications in Nigeria and What You Can Do
A rejection can involve repayment records, affordability or the lender’s own requirements.
Paying off a loan does not always update your credit report immediately.
Nigerian law provides rights to correct inaccurate data and challenge certain automated decisions.
A review can address mistakes without guaranteeing that a loan will be approved.

You have repaid your previous loan, applied for another and received a rejection. Before assuming you have a bad credit score, check what the lender actually assessed.
October 13, () – CreditRegistry, a Nigerian credit bureau, explains that lenders use credit reports alongside other information to assess applications. A report can contain your outstanding balances, repayment history and identifying details. It informs the decision but does not determine the outcome by itself.
Understanding the reason for a refusal helps you decide what to do next. An incorrectly recorded debt needs correcting. A loan repayment you cannot comfortably afford requires a different response.

Why a Loan App May Reject Your Application
Every second brings Nigerians closer to exercising their democratic right and shaping the future of our nation.
Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.
A lender may consider your existing debts, repayment record and ability to repay the amount requested. Its own lending requirements also influence the result.

For example, a borrower could have paid previous loans on time but already have substantial monthly repayments. Another applicant could have sufficient income but a credit report incorrectly showing an unpaid loan. These are illustrative situations, not findings about particular customers.
Ask the lender for the reason behind the refusal and which credit bureau, if any, it consulted. A rejection message alone does not establish that your credit report is wrong.
Why You Can Be Rejected After Repaying a Loan
Repaying a loan and updating the information held by a credit bureau are separate steps.
FairMoney’s published guidance says it updates credit-bureau records within five working days after a loan is fully repaid and closed, excluding weekends and public holidays. Customers whose records remain unchanged should send a recent credit report to its support team.
That is FairMoney’s stated timetable, not a deadline applying to every lender or independent confirmation of its performance. Nevertheless, it shows why a repayment receipt and a credit report may temporarily tell different stories.

How to Correct an Error in Your Credit Report
Obtain your report from the bureau the lender used. Check the loan balances, repayment status and personal details.
If a settled loan still appears unpaid, contact both the reporting lender and the bureau. Identify the disputed entry, attach repayment evidence and request written confirmation when the correction is completed. CreditRegistry provides a discrepancy-reporting process.
Section 34 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act gives individuals rights to access their personal data and correct inaccurate, outdated, incomplete or misleading information. Correcting a balance does not mean removing an accurate history of late payments.

When You Can Request a Human Review
An instant rejection does not prove that artificial intelligence made the decision.
However, Section 37 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act addresses decisions made entirely through automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects. It provides safeguards, including rights to “obtain human intervention”, express your position and contest the decision, subject to the section’s provisions.
Ask the lender to confirm how your application was assessed. Where these protections apply, request a review and provide the information you believe was missed or mishandled.
Unresolved privacy complaints can go to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. The FCCPC also accepts consumer complaints after you have approached the provider.
Before applying again after a correction, obtain the updated credit report. It should show the correct balance and repayment status, rather than leave you relying on a support message saying the issue has been resolved.
