Oluyede made the call on Friday at the inaugural Defence Space Administration (DSA) Day celebration held at the General Leo Irabor Hall, Abuja, under the theme, “Space Power and National Security”.

He urged the DSA to strengthen indigenous research and development, improve the reliability and security of space-based products, and deepen their integration into joint military and inter-agency operations to address emerging security challenges.

The CDS emphasised that developing homegrown space technology would enhance the military’s capacity to obtain relevant intelligence, improve operational coordination and respond more effectively to evolving security threats.

He commended the DSA for its achievements, particularly the launch of DelSat-1, the establishment of geospatial intelligence infrastructure, the Modular Earth Observation Outpost at the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI, and the commencement of academic activities at the Defence Space School in Orogun.

Oluyede charged the administration to build on these achievements by expanding indigenous research and innovation and ensuring that space-based products remain reliable, secure and useful to military operations.

He also stressed the need for stronger partnerships among the Armed Forces, academic institutions, industries and relevant government agencies to accelerate technological innovation and expand Nigeria’s capacity to harness space technology for defence and national development.

According to him, effective collaboration among these stakeholders would help strengthen the country’s indigenous capabilities and improve the integration of space-based solutions into military operations.

In his welcome address, the Chief of Defence Space Administration, Major General Philip Ilodibia, called for greater synergy among the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force to enhance joint operational effectiveness.

Ilodibia said closer cooperation among the three services was necessary to ensure that available space-based capabilities effectively supported military planning and operations.

He also called for sustained collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) and other relevant stakeholders to advance Nigeria’s space capabilities in support of national security and development.

The DSA chief underscored the importance of partnerships between defence institutions and civilian space agencies in strengthening research, developing indigenous solutions, and expanding the country’s capacity to deploy space technology for strategic purposes.
