September 16, () – Meta reportedly plans to release smart glasses without cameras, potentially addressing a concern that reaches beyond its customers to anyone standing in front of them.

The Information reported on September 15 that the company was preparing a model internally called Luna for release this autumn, according to Reuters.

The product and timing remain reported plans rather than a confirmed Meta launch.

For people uncomfortable with being filmed through someone’s glasses, removing the camera could offer reassurance that a recording indicator cannot.

Its usefulness would partly depend on people being able to recognise the camera-free version.

A Recording Light Depends on Being Noticed

Meta’s current glasses use a white capture light to signal when users take photos or record videos for their gallery.

In a July explanation of its safeguards, the company said cameras are disabled when the glasses detect that the light has been covered.

Meta also announced an update intended to detect indicators that had been physically damaged or modified, alongside action against businesses advertising tampering services.

Those measures show the company has already had to address attempts to defeat its recording notices.

An indicator still requires someone nearby to see it and understand its meaning.

Even when noticed, it signals recording without establishing that everyone in view has agreed to appear in the footage.

Some people are seeking their own warning systems. WIRED reported on September 16 that ZuckOff, an app developed by Polish programmer Pawel Szydlowski, had attracted more than 6,000 downloads.

It detects nearby smart glasses through Bluetooth signals, although it cannot establish that someone is recording.

That limitation illustrates the uncertainty around the devices. Knowing glasses are nearby does not reveal what their wearer is doing.

Removing the Camera Leaves Other Questions

Camera-free glasses would eliminate photography and video capture through an onboard camera. They would also give up capabilities that depend on seeing the wearer’s surroundings.

Other uses could remain practical. Meta’s existing glasses already support listening to music and podcasts and accessing an AI assistant, alongside photography.

Those current functions do not establish which features Luna would include.

If the reported model retains microphones, its audio controls would deserve scrutiny.

Buyers and people around them would need clear explanations of when sound is captured, what leaves the device and how recordings or voice interactions are handled.

Design would also influence acceptance. If camera-free frames closely resemble recording-capable models, a person across the table may still have no easy way to tell them apart.

Removing a camera could reduce the ability to intrude. Earning public confidence would also require making that change easy to recognise.
