The Abia State Government has cancelled the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026, across the state.

The cancellation was announced by the state Ministry of Environment in a statement authorised by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna.

The government, however, urged residents across the 17 local government areas of the state to continue to maintain clean and healthy surroundings despite the cancellation of the exercise.

It appealed to residents to properly dispose of refuse, clear blocked drainage channels, keep their homes and business premises clean, and avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste.

According to the government, environmental cleanliness should be treated as a collective responsibility and not as an activity to be observed only during the monthly sanitation exercise.

The government stressed that maintaining a clean environment was essential to promoting public health, preventing environmental hazards and ensuring a healthy and sustainable state.

It also urged residents to sustain the culture of cleanliness in their communities and cooperate with relevant environmental authorities in keeping Abia clean.
